40. Groundhog Day

Objavljeno, 3.3.2019. | My Yes To Life journey

I remember how for years I was longing for something in my life to change even though I was living the same predictable days.

We want Change, but at the same time we adore our routine that we keep doing every day without thinking, like sleepwalkers, and all because we love our cozy comfort zone – is the reason of which 90% of our days are the same as the day before: we sleep on the same side of bed, we wash our teeth first on the right starting with the upper teeth, we drink our coffee the same way, we drive to work using the same route and there is that same colleague who keeps getting on our nerves every time…

We dream about something new and unpredictable happening to us yet we live in a well-known program. We wish for some miracle to happen yet at the same time we stubbornly refuse to believe in miracles. You know that question: Hey, what’s up? The answer is almost always: Nothing, all the same…

When will something change? Only after we change.

This is extremely depicted in the movie “ Groundhog Day” but there is a beautiful lesson that can be derived from it. In the movie, Bill Murray portraits a sourpuss Phil Connors whose day, a day that he hated in advance, eternally repeats and Phil can do nothing to change it. His first reaction is despair. Every day he wakes up to the same song on the radio and the same comments by the radio hosts that today is Groundhog Day. Phill can’t escape this horror, his every day is the same. First, he is trying to distract himself, diving into an orgy of indulgences: eats mega-caloric deserts, beds hotties, steals money and cars, runs away from the police but when all this bores him, he tries to kill himself in the most creative ways but that doesn’t work either and he wakes up again to the same song every day. All this time, there is a beautiful producer with him that he keeps getting to know better every day and Phil wants her to like him too. That is why he learns to play the piano and starts experimenting with the idea of helping people. Gradually, his state changes from depression to joy until someday he wakes up beside her, the woman he loves. He wasn’t interesting to her while he was selfish but when his heart opened he could receive and give real love. Phil became someone else and got out of the program.

The old you can’t live a new life. You have to change in order for your life to truly change. The old Phil Connors lives the same day eternally but the new Phil gets the chance to live a new life.

There is a way of living in a world that is not here, although it seems to be. You do not change appearance, though you smile more frequently. Your forehead is serene; your eyes are quiet. And the ones who walk the world as you do recognize their own. Yet those who have not yet perceived the way will recognize you also and believe that you are like them, as you were before.

A Course in Miracles — W-155.1:1–5

Nobody is superior, nobody is inferior, but nobody is equal either. People are simply unique, incomparable. You are you, I am I. I have to contribute my potential to life; you have to contribute your potential to life. I have to discover my own being; you have to discover your own being.
